Lesson 8 of 8 · 12 min

Lowering your bills: what to ask and when

Practical, polite ways to reduce phone, internet, insurance and subscription costs, and the timing that makes them work.

In this lesson you will

  • Identify the moments when providers are most flexible
  • Research a fair comparison before contacting a provider
  • Use a simple script to ask for a better price
  • Avoid common traps when agreeing to a new deal

Education, not advice. This lesson explains general ideas and does not consider your personal situation.

Many prices are negotiable

Phone plans, internet, insurance and some subscriptions are often more flexible than they look. Acquiring a new customer usually costs a provider more than keeping an existing one, so many will offer a better price to stop you leaving: a retention offer.

Timing is everything

Your position is strongest when you are free to leave:

  • Near the end of a fixed contract
  • A few weeks before an annual renewal
  • When a promotional rate is about to end

Mid-contract, you often have little leverage because leaving may cost an exit fee. This is why tracking contract end dates matters: you cannot use the moment if you do not know when it is.
