Lesson 4 of 8 · 16 min

Investing concepts: risk, return and diversification

The core ideas behind investing, explained without jargon: what risk means, why diversification matters, how fees compound, and the questions to ask before investing. Education only.

In this lesson you will

  • Explain the relationship between risk and potential return
  • Describe common asset types in plain terms
  • Explain diversification and why it reduces specific risks
  • Understand how fees and time horizon affect outcomes
  • Recognise common warning signs of scams

Education, not advice. This lesson explains general ideas and does not consider your personal situation.

A word before we start

This lesson explains concepts. It does not recommend any investment, product, platform or strategy, and it does not consider your circumstances. Investing involves risk: the value of investments can fall as well as rise, and you may get back less than you put in. For personal recommendations, speak to a qualified, regulated financial adviser.

Saving vs investing

  • Saving usually means keeping money somewhere stable and accessible, such as a savings account. Its value in money terms is generally stable.
  • Investing means buying assets that may grow over time but can also fall in value.

Many educators describe a common order: an emergency fund and a plan for high-interest debt come before investing, because investments may be down at exactly the moment you need cash.
